BITSAT exam pattern

BITSAT is a 3-hour computer-based test with 130 multiple-choice questions on Physics, Chemistry, English Proficiency, Logical Reasoning and Mathematics (Biology for B.Pharm). A correct answer gets 3 marks and a wrong one loses 1, so the paper is out of 390. If you attempt all 130 questions before time runs out, you can take 12 bonus questions for up to 36 more marks.

This is the pattern BITSAT 2026 used. BITS publishes each year's pattern in its admission bulletin on admissions.bits-pilani.ac.in; check it when the BITSAT 2027 details are out.

Marking scheme

Bonus questions

The 12 bonus questions open only if you attempt all 130 questions with time still left. They are marked the same way (+3 / -1). Plan to score from the main paper and treat the bonus as extra.

What the pattern means for your time

3 hours for 130 questions is about 83 seconds a question, and less if you want time for the bonus questions. Mathematics has the most questions (40), so it usually decides your pace.

With +3 / -1, a blind guess among four options gains nothing on average. Ruling out one option makes a guess worth about +0.33 marks; ruling out two, +1. Skip what you can't narrow down and come back to it.

The way to get used to this is full-length practice under the same conditions. BITS Sarthi's BITSAT mock tests follow this pattern: the same sections and marking, a 3-hour timer and a question palette, with a report on your score, time and mistakes after each attempt. The first full mock is free, and you can try the test screen with five questions without signing in.

Common questions

How many questions are there in BITSAT?

130 compulsory questions in 3 hours: Physics 30, Chemistry 30, English Proficiency 10, Logical Reasoning 20 and Mathematics (or Biology) 40. Students who attempt all 130 in time can take 12 bonus questions.

What is the BITSAT marking scheme?

Each correct answer gets 3 marks and each wrong answer loses 1 mark. Unanswered questions score 0. The paper is out of 390 marks, and the 12 bonus questions can add up to 36 more.

Should I guess in BITSAT?

A blind guess among four options gains nothing on average (+3 a quarter of the time, -1 the rest). If you can rule out even one option, a guess between the remaining three is worth about +0.33 marks on average.

Is BITSAT online?

Yes. BITSAT is a computer-based test taken at a test centre, in one 3-hour sitting.
